On December 1, 2015, freak weather conditions all came together on one single day to swamp Chennai (India) with the heaviest rainfall in a century. If that was bad news the worse is that it could all happen again. The Hindu reported on how a host of reasons contributed to how Chennai’s wettest season has come in its hottest year.
An article by Economics & Political Weekly (EPW) has suggested that the recent floods in Chennai are a fallout of real estate riding roughshod over the city’s water bodies. Facilitated by an administration that tweaked and modified building rules and urban plans, the real estate boom has consumed the city’s lakes, ponds, tanks and large marshlands.
