Prof. Kuntala Lahiri-Dutt of the Australian National University (ASU) explores community issues in natural resource management; her research focuses on water and mining sectors, and uses a mixed methodological approach. She is currently at the last leg of an externally-funded ‘action-research project’ on artisanal and small-scale mines & quarries in India. As part of this project, she has made a documentary film on basalt, or blackstone as it is known locally, quarry workers in eastern India. The film can be viewed by clicking on this link:
Looking through the lens of labour processes and production organisation, it becomes easier to relate the mushrooming of such mining/quarrying with the growing informal sector of the economies of countries located in the Global South.
